Celebrating 6 Years at PayPal!

Reflecting on three key learnings from my sixth year at PayPal - creating impact, growing teams, and finding balance in productivity.

Intention: As I celebrate my 6 year anniversary at PayPal, I want to reflect on three pivotal learnings that have shaped my approach to work and leadership this past year.

Create impactful work

Throughout this year, I've learned that impact isn't just about the volume of work you produce - it's about the value and change you create. I've shifted my focus from completing tasks to asking: "What lasting difference will this make?" This mindset has helped me prioritize initiatives that truly move the needle for our team, our users, and the business.

Impactful work often means saying no to good opportunities so you can say yes to great ones. It means taking the time to understand the bigger picture before diving into solutions. I've found that when I align my efforts with strategic goals and user needs, the work becomes more meaningful and the results more significant.

Grow your teammates and your team will grow together

One of the most rewarding discoveries this year has been witnessing the compounding effect of investing in others' growth. When you dedicate time to mentoring, coaching, and empowering your teammates, something magical happens - the entire team elevates together.

I've learned that growing teammates isn't just about sharing technical knowledge. It's about creating psychological safety where people feel comfortable taking risks and learning from failures. It's about celebrating their wins and helping them navigate challenges. When each team member grows, they bring fresh perspectives, innovative solutions, and increased confidence that benefits everyone.

The time I've invested in 1:1s, pair programming sessions, and providing thoughtful feedback has come back tenfold. A team where everyone is learning and growing together becomes more resilient, creative, and capable of tackling bigger challenges.

Being productive isn't always a good thing

This might be the most counterintuitive lesson I've learned this year: constant productivity can actually be counterproductive. I've always prided myself on being efficient and getting things done, but I've realized that without intentional pauses to reflect, I was sometimes running in the wrong direction - just very quickly.

It's important to make time to think about how you're working and why you're working. Are you solving the right problems? Are your approaches still effective? Are you building technical debt while trying to move fast? These questions require space to breathe and think deeply.

I've started building in reflection time - moments to step back and evaluate not just what I've accomplished, but whether those accomplishments are moving me toward my goals. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is to slow down, reassess, and make sure you're climbing the right mountain before sprinting to the top.

This shift has helped me work smarter, not just harder. It's reduced burnout, improved decision-making, and led to more sustainable, thoughtful solutions.

Looking ahead to year seven, I'm excited to continue applying these lessons and discovering new ones. Here's to more growth, more impact, and more intentional work!
